An Ultimate Guide to Italian Lakes

Oozing in history, culture and captivating panoramas, Italy is one of Europe’s most mesmerising destinations. Venture away from the cities and into rural pastures and you will find Italian lakes holidays, with the beautiful Dolomite mountains as a sensational backdrop.

A dream for any outdoors fan, this area of the country is blessed with breathtaking scenery that you can wile away hours exploring whilst the glistening lakes invite you to participate in its activities. In fact, the sheer view of them will make you want to jump right in.

Although there are many lakes found in this glorious country, two tourist hotspots are Lake Como and Lake Garda, attractive for various reasons.

Lake Garda

Easily accessible from the north via the Brenner Pass, Lake Garda is a major tourist attraction and also the largest lake in Italy. Particularly advisable for the adventurous types and thrill seekers amongst you, Lake Garda offers a whole host of enjoyable activities, including a vast array of watersports. From windsurfing and sailing to kitesurfing or a good old dip in the lake, you’ll most certainly never be bored.

Lake Como

Slightly more glamorous than its larger sister, Lake Como offers elegance and glitz and is popular with visitors who are seeking a more relaxing sojourn whilst still being able to explore their surroundings with ease. Travel by boat between various resorts, or set off on a day trip to nearby Lake Maggiore or Lake Orta. Discover the vibrancy of Como Town or head to Varenna and take the steep path to Vezio Castle, following the many walking trails.

Although the Italian lakes prove to be extremely popular with watersports enthusiasts, travellers preferring watersports holidays with the added bonus of sea and sand can find plenty of alternative beach vacations to suit their needs. With so many options available, you’ll be spoilt for choice, no matter what you decide.
